Wealth Doesn\u2019t Eliminate the Need to Negotiate<\/h3>\n<p>Having more capital does not mean spending carelessly.<br \/>\nWhy pay full price when negotiation could reduce costs by 50% or more?<br \/>\nConsistently applying negotiation skills in business can directly impact margins and bottom lines.<\/p>\n<p>Great companies stay frugal and deliberate.<br \/>\nThey view every transaction through a negotiation lens, regardless of budget size.<\/p>\n<h2>Real-World Learning from Business Mentors<\/h2>\n<p>Where did I learn these techniques?<br \/>\nFrom a proven mentor, <strong>Dr. Azizan Osman<\/strong>, during the <strong>Master Your Business seminar<\/strong> (3\u20137 December 2014).<\/p>\n<p>During the seminar, we were taught <strong>13 powerful negotiation strategies<\/strong> to use with suppliers.<br \/>\nThen, we were assigned a real-world group challenge: &#8220;Extreme Shopping&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>We had to buy <strong>5 items<\/strong> using the strategies taught.<br \/>\nAnd the result?<\/p>\n<h2>Over 60% Average Discount\u2014Achieved Using Strategy<\/h2>\n<p>We secured products with an <strong>average discount exceeding 60%<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHere\u2019s how we used our negotiation skills in business during the activity:<\/p>\n<h3>(1) Always Ask For It<\/h3>\n<p>If you don\u2019t ask, you won\u2019t receive.<br \/>\nNever expect sellers to offer discounts without being prompted.<br \/>\nNegotiation requires initiative. It\u2019s a proactive skill.<br \/>\nThis first principle is a cornerstone of negotiation skills in business.<\/p>\n<p>Asking opens possibilities. Not asking closes them. Always initiate.<\/p>\n<h3>(2) Shop in Groups<\/h3>\n<p>Buying as a group strengthens confidence and support.<br \/>\nEach member can contribute to the negotiation process.<br \/>\nFor people like me who hesitate to speak up, teammates help boost results.<br \/>\nIn practice, this teamwork enhances negotiation skills in business settings.<\/p>\n<p>This technique is often used in procurement clusters and consortium buying.<\/p>\n<h3>(3) Buy in Bulk<\/h3>\n<p>We bought hats. Normal price: RM35 per piece.<br \/>\nIn bulk: RM8 each. That\u2019s an instant win.<br \/>\nWe also used the <strong>Affiliation Strategy<\/strong> here.<\/p>\n<p>Bulk-buying is a classic use case for negotiation skills in business.<br \/>\nIt creates volume leverage, driving price efficiency.<\/p>\n<h3>(4) Build Affiliation<\/h3>\n<p>We used small talk and connections:<br \/>\n&#8220;You\u2019re from Melaka? Same here!&#8221; or &#8220;Our kids go to the same school!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even compliments work: &#8220;You look great today!&#8221;<br \/>\nWe tried that\u2014though it didn\u2019t always work!<br \/>\nStill, this technique builds rapport and trust.<br \/>\nAffiliation is one of the underrated but powerful negotiation skills in business.<\/p>\n<p>Emotional connection can soften price resistance.<\/p>\n<h3>(5) Use Strategic Objections<\/h3>\n<p>We moved on to buy slippers. Bulk requirement: 12 pairs.<br \/>\nPrice tag: RM18++. Market price: RM10 and above.<br class=\"yoast-text-mark\" \/>&gt;We reduced the price to RM4.50 per pair.<\/p>\n<p>We used the <strong>&#8220;Create a Reason&#8221; Strategy<\/strong> to avoid buying 12.<br class=\"yoast-text-mark\" \/>&gt;We said: &#8220;These slippers feel uncomfortable,&#8221; or &#8220;The quality seems low.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These objections built pressure to offer a smaller bulk option.<br \/>\nThis scenario reflects real-time application of negotiation skills in business.<\/p>\n<h3>(6) Use &#8220;Good Guy, Bad Guy&#8221; Strategy<\/h3>\n<p>One teammate acted disappointed: &#8220;Let\u2019s just go somewhere else.&#8221;<br \/>\nA small staged disagreement created urgency.<br \/>\nIn the end, we only had to buy 9 pairs. Build confidence.<\/p>\n<h3>(9) Ask Even When Rushed<\/h3>\n<p>We bought <a href=\"https:\/\/higoatofficial.com\/\">HiGoat<\/a> milk and massage oil.<br \/>\nTime was short, so we couldn\u2019t negotiate much.<br \/>\nBut we still asked for a discount\u2014and got it.<\/p>\n<p>If we hadn\u2019t asked, we would\u2019ve paid full price.<br \/>\nA reminder that negotiation skills in business don\u2019t require perfect conditions. Just initiative.<\/p>\n<h2>Final Thoughts: Turn Skills into Daily Habits<\/h2>\n<p>Negotiation is not just a technique\u2014it\u2019s a mindset.<br \/>\nUse these strategies daily in your business interactions.<br \/>\nNever assume value is fixed.
